This is a very rare and generally LOVELY condition 1878 Wisden paperback, that has been beautifully rebound. The fifteenth edition.

Handsomely half bound in red leather. Red marbled end papers and gilt to top edge. Binding by prestigious London binding company, Morrell Binders.

The outside boards are splendid.

Wisden produced the 1878 and 1879 editions using what can only be described as ¬†‘heavier, shiny’ paper for the front and rear covers. Over time the majority of covers on the ’78 have faded…some far worse than others. The covers on this edition are present and they are faded. I would honestly say that the covers are good, probably 6.75/10 when put alongside what may be found (with patience) for this year. The rear of both cover pages are a little aged.

The pages within this 1878 are absolutely delightful especially as finding editions from the 1870s is rare enough. Usually the internal pages of the older editions have foxing and ageing, this has NONE!!

A rather lovely almanack.

Contents include:
The Almanack.
Umpires and Where To Find Them.
The Laws of Cricket.
The Four England Twelves in Australia. to Australia.
Gentlemen v Players Matches in 1877.
An Innings of 546 v MCC & Grounds..
The Counties: – Middlesex, Nottinghamshire, Surrey, Gloucestershire, Kent, Sussex, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Derbyshire, Sussex, Hampshire

“The new Briton – forceful, plebeian, undeferential, a winner. He is cricket’s Thatcher.”

(The Sunday Telegraph on Graham Gooch, 1990)

Pre 1938 Wisdens are invariably found in need of restoration. I take the view that restoring these editions to as close to their original condition as possible, is in the best interests of the book and the future owner. All restoration, repairs or enhancement are mentioned. I only use professionals to undertake this work.
