1928 Wisden Hardback

£650.00 £520.00

Thank you for looking at this Very Good condition 1928 Wisden Hardback edition. The sixty fifth almanack.

The front and rear boards are in Very Very Good condition. They are clean and with only minor bumping, and some rubbing and scuffing. The gilt to the front is also excellent.

The spine is in Very Good condition. It is strong and firm. There is a crease to the top which can be seen clearly on the photographs. This does not detract from a lovely edition. The gilt to the spine is super.

Internally the front and rear hinges are in lovely condition, the paste-down pages to the front and rear likewise, and the contents are in super condition.

The page block is also very good, a little dusty to the top, lovely to the side.

The 1928 hardback has to be one of the trickiest post WW1 edition to find in anything better than Very Good condition – there are a couple of  reasons; a educed print run and a poor production process. The Wall Street Crash and ensuing world recession had its impact on Wisden, half the workforce was released and the print runs for the 1928 to 1932 editions were almost halved.
The materials used on the hardback editions for the 1928 to 1932 period were also of a lesser quality than previously used. One example was the thickness of the boards – the 1928, 1929, 1930 and 1931 hardbacks were produced on thinner boards and over time the spine board would become creased, cracked and wrinkled. A small number of each years run were actually printed using better quality materials, the remains of the pre-crash stock, the publishers decided to use these materials on press and complimentary copies. I believe this edition was from that run.

“He liked slapstick, but he knew when and at whom to throw the pie. His short, square build, busy movements and low-geared run were made for comedy.”
(R.C. Robertson-Glasgow, on Patsy Hendren))
