Wisen Editor, Lawrence Booth.
“There was no looking beyond Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, captain and coach, after the revolutionary cricket played by England’s Test team in the second half of 2022. When the pair joined forces, England had won one of their previous 17 Tests. By the end of the year, they had won nine out of ten, including a historic 3-0 whitewash in Pakistan, having scored at a blistering rate and got people talking about Test cricket again. As the architects of an approach that may change the way Test cricket is played all round the world, Stokes and McCullum were a natural fit for the cover of this year’s Wisden.”
Wisden 2023 is the 160th edition of the most famous sports book in the world – published every year since 1864. As ever, it contains some of the world’s finest sports writing. It reflects on the extraordinary life of Shane Warne, who died at the age of 52, with a superb assessment by Gideon Haigh, first-person recollections from several of his Test victims, and a statistical analysis by Andy Zaltzman. David Frith remembers another legendary bowler, S. F. Barnes, on the 150th anniversary of his birth. Jonathan Liew bids farewell to Eoin Morgan, who stood down last year as England’s most successful white-ball captain. Patrick Kidd writes about Queen Elizabeth and cricket, and James Wallace tells the astonishing tale of the role played in the development of the Dukes ball by a German thought to have been interned at Auschwitz. Wisden also reports on England’s triumph at the T20 World Cup, to go alongside their 2019 ODI success, and on their Test team’s thrilling rejuvenation under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes.
As usual, Wisden includes the eagerly awaited Notes by the Editor, the Cricketers of the Year awards, and the obituaries. And, as ever, there are reports and scorecards for every Test, together with forthright opinion, compelling features and comprehensive records.
The edition will of course be a comprehensive record of world cricket, including:
The 2022 County Championship.
India v England.
South Africa in England.
New Zealand in England.
The 2022 Twenty20 World Cup.
The Hundred.
